I was reminded how much I hate buying cars today

So I went to see a GTI today that I posted about last week. I came prepared as I had already presented my #’s and really wasn’t asking for something unrealistic.

I wanted 22,375 OTD and 3k for my car. Worth noting, this was never laughed at by the sales guy I spoke to this past week.

Their response in person  was 23,000 OTD and 3k for my car.

I said no, they came back with 22,500 OTD and 2,750 for my car.

I got up and left. The GTI is now listed for $1,000 above what it was yesterday.

Are you saying you walked out on a car because the dealer wouldn’t come down 1.67% on their price ?

I walked out because I presented my  deal to their sales guy a week ago and was told that’s a deal. When in front of them I get told it’s now not a deal

I see. That seems like a more reasonable reason to walk.

Did they agree a week before it would be a done deal? Because you stated “this was never laughed at by the sales guy”, which means to me that it was something they would consider, just not unrealistic.

Unless you signed something, nothing is agreed to with contracts and agreements are involved.

Plus you got up and left after only one counter offer?  You could have played a little longer and got the deal you wanted.

Yeah i know its never a done deal until paper is signed, I even asked for a bill of sale but was told “nah come in”. I got overly optimistic on this.

It’s also cause I buy cars for my job without BOS’s signed on a consistent basis, just going on word over the phone or email. Something I apprently forgot was a thing

... and you never made it to financing where the real games begin. Seriously tho why not buy one through your work and use bank financing?

We have over 100 VW’s...and not a single GTI. My jobs retail prices are uh...high.

I put a deposit on a Series.Gray WRX five weeks ago, the day after they hit the dealer inventory systems. It came in Wednesday and I picked it up today.

Every dealer in the Chicago area marked up the price by 5-6k. The dealer I bought from didn’t. We emailed to make sure they were selling it at MSRP. They said yes. We drove down immediately and after we put the deposit, we were like, “You know you’re the only dealer not marking up this car?” and they’re like, “Yup.”

Today the salesperson (who was great all the way through the process) said, “You know, we made a mistake pricing the car, but we just really hope you come back if you buy another Subaru and send people our way.” And we were just, “Yeah, we knew that.”

Anyway, dealerships are weird.

You think you’ll get the car you want somewhere else?

Our most recent purchase (19 Forester) I was prepared with a folder of all the documents I thought might come in handy to negotiate the deal I wanted. They ended up at a better price than I was anticipating on the second try :-/

So, on the plus side, I was happy for the quickness of the negotiations... but on the other side I feel like maybe I left too much on the table.

Oh well, the Forester is sweet, and gets substantially better fuel economy than the Odyssey it replaced.

That sucks. Dealing with the salespeople is a drag. I bought a car today and the whole experience was awful. From the waiting to the haggling, to the sales guy telling me he was going to get yelled at for bringing his manager such a low number (hint: that's a you and your boss problem, not a me problem), to the nonsense with the finance guy who could “definitely match” the rate I was getting from an outside lender. It was hard not to walk away.

But fuck it. I got this.

Kinja'd!!!

And it has brown leather interior. Anybody want to buy a C30?

You wouldn’t have this problem if you bought a Tesla instead.
